I am thinking of starting on a major renovation to my home which is Hobsons Bay and a friend told me that I might be required to get a building permit before I could start. Since am not building a new house but just renovating it, is it true that I will need the permit and why?

Whether you are building, renovating, demolishing or just putting up a fence, you require a building permit for this. The permit highlights the approved specifications that comply with the standards in the Building Regulations and Building Act which ensure that whatever is constructed is safe for use in terms of safety and health. The Permit can be obtained from the Council or a registered private surveyor. This will be valid for two years since it is a home.

There is no escape-goat here madam, whether building, renovating or some will say maintaining, you must acquire legal permit. This permit contains building regulations that you must comply with before thinking of building or even demolishing the house. Doing it your way is riskier as you can be sued against violation of building act.

A building is a very important procedural requirement whether you want to build your house in Australia or any other place in the world. In Australia and some other cities around the world, this procedural requirement is extended to encompass renovation, demolition and even making some landscape changes that are likely to raise eyebrows in the neighborhood such as building a wall round your property.
